Man in Bangli Dies After Being Shot by His Own Rifle While Hunting Civets
PJ, a resident of Banjar Bangkiansidem, Bangbang Village, Tembuku District, was found dead in the Sidaparna ravine in Tembuku Village. The 41-year-old man died from an air rifle shot.
“The victim fell into a ravine and died from a shot to the head,” said the Tembuku Police Chief, AKP I Putu Dadi, to detikBali on Monday (7/9/2026).
Dadi said the incident began when PJ went civet hunting in the Sidaparna forest on Wednesday (3/9/2026) at around 9pm local time. Armed with an air rifle, he hunted civets together with five companions.
PJ and his five friends walked in single file searching for civets, with PJ at the back of the line. Because they were hunting at night in dark conditions, PJ slipped and fell into the ravine.
“The ravine is 13 metres deep. The victim’s friends searched for him after he fell,” said Dadi.
When PJ fell, a gunshot was heard. When his five friends found him, PJ was already lying at the bottom of the ravine. He was rescued by his companions and rushed to RSUP Prof Ngoerah hospital. However, after several days of treatment there, PJ could not be saved.
“The victim’s body was initially placed at Bangli Regional Hospital. Today the victim has been cremated,” he said.
Dadi said PJ’s five companions had been questioned. The results showed no indication of their involvement in PJ’s death.
PJ is believed to have been struck by his own rifle when he fell into the ravine, which triggered a discharge from the gun, with the pellet hitting his head.
“There is no indication of anyone’s involvement. It was purely the victim’s own negligence. The bullet struck the victim’s head, but did not penetrate. The pellet lodged in his head,” he said.
