Man Impersonating Metro Police Officer Steals Motorcycle Using Hypnosis in East Jakarta
Jakarta, VIVA — Claiming to be a member of Jakarta Metro Police, a man is alleged to have hypnotised and stolen a motorcycle belonging to a motorcycle taxi driver at petrol station 34.135.06 Makasar in East Jakarta.
“Yes, the incident occurred at the petrol station here. The suspect arrived at the petrol station claiming to be from the Narcotics Unit of Jakarta Metro Police to take the victim’s motorcycle,” said Agus Sunarya (50), a security officer at petrol station 34.135.06 Makasar, on Monday, 2 March 2026.
The incident took place on Friday, 27 February 2026, at approximately 21:30 WIB. A man arrived at the station riding a motorcycle with the victim.
“The suspect arrived at the petrol station claiming to be from the Narcotics Unit of Jakarta Metro Police. I immediately coordinated with my commander and other officers, then called the local neighbourhood head,” Agus explained.
However, whilst Agus was still on the phone attempting to verify the man’s identity, the suspect and victim suddenly left the location.
“After I called the neighbourhood head, it was only a brief moment before the suspect and victim left and disappeared. After that, I had no further information,” Agus said.
He stated that only one person was involved. Upon arriving at the petrol station, the suspect was riding the motorcycle with the victim, who is a motorcycle taxi driver.
Regarding the suspect’s claim to be a police officer, Agus said he could not verify the authenticity.
“I don’t really know if he was a real police officer or not. What is clear is that the suspect arrived with the victim, riding the victim’s motorcycle,” Agus said.
The victim returned to the petrol station the following day, Saturday, 28 February 2026, to ask if the security officer knew the suspect. The victim then reported that he had been hypnotised and his motorcycle had been stolen. According to the victim’s account to Agus, the suspect initially hired him as a motorcycle taxi driver from outside the Hajj Hostel Terminal.
“During the journey, the suspect asked to be taken to Makasar Police Station and went inside the police office for a while, probably just to convince the victim that he was indeed a police officer. He may not have actually entered, perhaps only appeared at the front,” Agus explained.
After that, the victim was directed to Makasar petrol station. Shortly thereafter, the suspect absconded with the victim’s motorcycle in the Kramat Jati area.
