A 36-year-old resident of Bunga Mekar village, Nusa Penida district, Klungkung, Bali, named Wayan Lanang, was found dead in a 4-metre well. The dramatic rescue operation by a joint SAR team took place on Monday, 25 May 2026. Cakra Negara, coordinator of the Nusa Penida SAR standby unit, explained that residents initially attempted to drain the well using a pump. However, this effort proved unsuccessful, and with the situation worsening, the community requested assistance from the SAR team. The Nusa Penida Search and Rescue standby unit, consisting of four personnel, arrived at the scene around 2 PM WITA. ‘The victim was successfully recovered at around 2:40 PM WITA, confirmed deceased. We then handed the body over to the family,’ Cakra stated. The incident was initially reported to the Babinsa (military liaison officer) of Bunga Mekar village. The family had reported the victim missing after he failed to return home, prompting an initial search by relatives and local residents. Search efforts continued through the night until Monday morning, when the family suspected the victim had fallen into the well. ‘This morning at approximately 6:45 AM WITA, his aunt found the victim’s belongings near the well. The family suspected he had fallen in after discovering his sandals and cigarettes around the well,’ Cakra added.
