Man detained over suspected Molotov cocktail attack on Surabaya traffic posts

The Surabaya City Police have detained a man suspected of being linked to the throwing of objects believed to be Molotov cocktails at the Margorejo and Cito traffic police posts on Saturday night (15/8).

“It is correct that the Surabaya City Police have detained a man suspected of being connected to the incident at the Margorejo and Cito traffic police posts on Saturday night,” said East Java Regional Police Head of Public Relations, Senior Commissioner Jules Abraham Abast, when confirmed in Surabaya on Sunday.

According to him, investigators are still examining the motive, evidence, sequence of events, and the possible involvement of other parties.

“Further developments will be conveyed once the examination results are sufficient and have been verified,” he said.

He confirmed that the police service posts where the incidents occurred remain operational and that services to the public continue as normal.

The East Java Regional Police have urged the public to remain calm and carry on with their activities as usual. The public has also been asked not to be easily influenced by unverified information, speculation or narratives.

“We also hope the public will not disseminate unverified information,” he said.

Information can be submitted through the nearest police station or the Indonesian National Police service via the toll-free number 110, available 24 hours a day.

“The East Java Regional Police and its ranks will continue to take the necessary police measures to maintain a safe and conducive security and public order situation,” he said.
