Jakarta — A man claiming to be a member of the Metro Jaya Regional Police Force allegedly hypnotised and stole a motorcycle belonging to an ojek driver at Petrol Station 34.135.06 in Makasar, East Jakarta.

“Yes, it’s true the incident occurred at the petrol station here. The suspect came to the petrol station claiming to be from the Narcotics Division of the Metro Jaya Regional Police to take the victim’s motorcycle,” said Agus Sunarya (50), a security officer at Petrol Station 34.135.06 Makasar, in East Jakarta on Monday.

The alleged crime occurred on Friday evening (27 February) around 21:30 Western Indonesian Time. A man arrived at the petrol station together with the victim, riding the same motorcycle.

“The suspect came to the petrol station claiming to be from the narcotics division of the Metro Jaya Regional Police. I immediately coordinated with my commander and colleagues, then called the local neighbourhood chief,” Agus explained.

However, whilst Agus was still making telephone calls to verify the man’s identity, the suspect and victim suddenly left the location.

“After I called the neighbourhood chief, it was only a moment later when the suspect and victim immediately left; they were gone. After that, I didn’t know what happened,” Agus clarified.

Regarding the suspect’s claim to be a police officer, Agus said he did not know whether it was true.

“I’m not certain whether he was a real police officer or not; what’s clear is that the suspect came with the victim and rode away on the victim’s motorcycle,” Agus said.

The victim returned to the petrol station the next day, Saturday (28 February), to ask whether the security staff recognised the suspect.

At that time, the victim claimed he had been hypnotised and his motorcycle had been stolen.

According to Agus’s account of the victim’s testimony, the suspect initially hired the ojek service from in front of the Pilgrims’ Dormitory Terminal.

“During the journey, the suspect asked to be taken to Makasar Police Station and went inside the police office briefly, apparently just to convince the victim that he was indeed a police officer. He might not have actually entered; he could have just stood at the entrance,” Agus explained.

“The victim said that after his motorcycle was taken, he was dazed for a moment, then only realised his motorcycle had been taken by the suspect,” Agus added.

The alleged hypnotism crime went viral on Instagram social media account @info_pinang_ranti. According to surveillance camera (CCTV) footage, the suspected perpetrator was wearing all black clothing and sunglasses.

In the account’s statement, the stolen motorcycle was a 2019 Honda Beat with license plate number B 5449 TBS.

After regaining consciousness, the victim walked from Langgar Street, Kramat Jati, to Makasar Police Station to report the incident.

One day after the incident, officers from Kramat Jati Police Station visited the petrol station to request statements and view CCTV footage to establish a complete timeline of events.

“On Saturday (28 February), officers from Kramat Jati Police Station came here, asked for statements, inquired about the complete sequence of events, and reviewed the CCTV,” Agus said.

As of now, the alleged hypnotism case remains under investigation by police. Authorities are also tracking down the identity of the suspect who impersonated a police official to commit the crime.
