Man burgles restaurant

JAKARTA (JP): A thief broke into a restaurant in Senayan in Central Jakarta Saturday and stole Rp 1.5 million (US$630) in cash, a facsimile machine and a telephone.

Sgt. Supratman of the Central Jakarta Police precinct said the thief entered the Pondok Laguna restaurant through a ventilation duct in the bathroom in the early morning.

"The thief then entered the restaurant manager's office and stole the money from a safety box," Supratman said.

He said the thief also stole the facsimile machine and the telephone from the manager's room. "The thief then escaped the same way."

The restaurant's security guard found a mess in the manager's office when he opened the restaurant in the morning.

"The security guard saw the safety box was open and the telephone and the facsimile machine were missing," said Supratman.

The security guard then reported the theft to Tanah Abang Police subprecinct, he said.

According to Supratman, the police presume the thief was someone who knew the restaurant well. (jun)
