Man arrested for drug possession

JAKARTA (JP): West Jakarta police arrested a man for possession of a variety of banned drugs in a street operation early yesterday morning.

The police also seized two pocketknives from the suspect, identified as Wahyudin, 52, who was driving a Feroza jeep, when he was stopped in the Tambora area at around 2 a.m., City Police spokesman Lt. Col. Iman Haryatna said.

The drugs found in Wahyudin's possession included 330 Ecstasy pills, 832 sedative tablets and several grams of dried marijuana and heroin.

"We're still questioning him to find out the source of the drugs and whether he is a trafficker working for a syndicate here," Iman said.

The routine night operation, code named Kilat Jaya, is being carried out by all police precincts here in an attempt to find wanted criminals and to help reduce crime rates throughout Greater Jakarta.

On Wednesday, the East Jakarta police found an AK 47 automatic rifle and two FN 45 guns with bullets in a car driven by two men, who are still under intensive interrogation.

"They are still being questioned as to whether they had anything to do with the shooting at a supermarket at Kalimalang in East Jakarta on Sunday evening," Iman said.

The police operation is also aimed at discotheques and pubs, which are often used for gambling and prostitution. (bsr)
