TANGERANG: A man was arrested upon his arrival on Wednesday
from Lisbon at 5:40 p.m. on KLM 837 at Terminal II, Soekarno-
Hatta International Airport, for illegal possession of firearms.
An airport custom and excise officer, Abdul Aziz, said the
suspect was Kabul Slamet, 48, who lived on Jl. H. Awaludin, Kebon
Melati subdistrict, Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta.
"When he was passing the customs check, the X-ray machine
displayed suspicious objects in his baggage," Abdul said on
Thursday.
Officers opened and checked the baggage and found a black box
containing a Walton Major 88C/9mm pistol, 20 rounds of ammunition
and 49 tear gas bullets.
The suspect, who failed to show any legal documentation for
the weapons, was handed over to airport police for further
questioning.
It was the first arrest at the airport this year involving
weapons possession. The suspect could be charged with violating
Law No. 12/1951 on illegal possession of firearms. If convicted,
he could be sentenced to death. -- JP
