Man Arrested for Bomb Threat at South Jakarta Primary School Named as Suspect

Police have named a 34-year-old man, identified by the initials MY, as a suspect in a terror case at SDN Srengseng Sawah 15 in the Jagakarsa district of South Jakarta. The Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit at the South Jakarta Metro Police, AKBP Iskandarsyah, confirmed the suspect’s status, stating that two pieces of evidence had been secured. The suspect is currently undergoing a forensic psychological examination to ascertain his motive for sending bomb threats to teachers and education staff at the school via WhatsApp. MY, who resides near the school, was arrested shortly after the incident on Monday. The Head of Public Relations for the South Jakarta Metro Police, AKP Joko Adi, explained that the incident began when the suspect sent a message claiming there were bombs at 11 locations within the school. Following the report, police deployed the Gegana bomb squad, the Densus 88 anti-terror unit, and K-9 sniffer dogs to conduct a sweep, which confirmed the entire area was safe. Investigators also questioned five witnesses, including the teachers and staff who received the threats, and conducted an IT analysis to track the perpetrator. During interrogation, officers seized an Oppo mobile phone that was still connected to the WhatsApp number used to send the bomb threats. The suspect faces charges under Article 600 and/or Article 601 of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code, carrying a minimum sentence of five years and a maximum of twenty years in prison.
