Man Arrested by Residents After Attempted Motorcycle Theft Turns Out to be Mistaken Identity Due to Intoxication

A man was detained by residents after being suspected of attempting to steal a motorcycle in a restaurant parking lot in Kota Wisata Cibubur, Gunung Putri, Bogor Regency. Video footage of the moment the man was apprehended went viral on social media.

In the viral video, a man is seen surrounded by a crowd. The footage depicts the individual being caught attempting to steal a motorcycle and being physically assaulted by several people before being handed over to the police.

Gunung Putri Police Chief, Commissioner Hilal Adi Imawan, confirmed the incident shown in the viral video. The man, identified by the initials S, was detained by security guards due to suspicious behaviour.

“The security guards grew suspicious of the suspect’s movements and immediately detained him for initial questioning. He was then brought to the Gunung Putri Police Station for further investigation,” said Hilal.

Hilal noted that the man, S, was under the influence of alcohol when detained by security. During questioning, S claimed he had been asked to retrieve a motorcycle belonging to a friend, but had mistakenly inserted his key into the wrong motorcycle, leading to his apprehension by security.

“Based on the results of the clarification and investigation, the incident began when the man, S, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, was instructed by his friend to take a motorcycle,” Hilal explained.

“The suspect then attempted to insert the key he was carrying into the ignition of one of the motorcycles parked at the scene. This action was noticed by the security guards on duty,” he added.

Resolution Reached

Hilal stated that the owner of the motorcycle, identified as P, and the man, S, have agreed to a peaceful settlement. S has received an apology from the owner and has signed a written agreement promising not to repeat the incident.

“After the clarification process and considering the victim’s wishes, both parties agreed to resolve the matter through family-style mediation. The victim accepted the apology and chose to settle the matter peacefully,” said Hilal.

“During the mediation process facilitated by the police, S admitted his actions, apologised to the victim, and signed a statement promising not to repeat similar actions in the future,” he concluded.
