Mamuju Prison Inmates Supply Lettuce to Free Nutritious Meal Programme Kitchens

Lettuce cultivated by inmates at the Class IIB Mamuju Detention Centre (Rutan) has begun supplying the government’s Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) programme. Through a partnership with the Bebanga Nutrition Service Unit (SPPG), a harvest of 103 lettuce heads grown within the prison was delivered to support the nutritional needs of thousands of programme beneficiaries.

The Head of the Mamuju Detention Centre, Sudirman, stated that this initiative is a tangible result of the prison’s independence-building rehabilitation programme. He noted that inmates are not only equipped with skills but are also given the opportunity to produce goods that benefit the wider community.

“We continuously encourage the independence-building activities at Mamuju Detention Centre to yield products with both practical and economic value. Alhamdulillah, the lettuce cultivated by the inmates can now be supplied to support the Free Nutritious Meal Programme. This motivates us to further develop the agricultural and fisheries sectors sustainably,” he said.

Sudirman also expressed his appreciation to the Bebanga SPPG for their trust in utilising the inmates’ agricultural produce. “We thank the Bebanga SPPG for agreeing to take and use the inmates’ lettuce. Such support is very meaningful to us as it motivates the inmates to continue developing their farming skills. We hope this cooperation can continue and grow in the future,” he added.

Through this activity, the results of the inmates’ rehabilitation not only enhance their skills and independence but are also beginning to contribute directly to meeting the community’s food needs via the Free Nutritious Meal Programme.
