Mamdani Camp Protests to ABC Over The View's Anti-Semitism Accusation

The administration of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has reportedly protested to ABC News executives after a host on ‘The View’, Sara Haines, described a legislative candidate backed by the mayor as ‘anti-Semitic’. The dispute is said to have the potential to affect the relationship between the city government and the political talk show. According to a Semafor report, the protest arose after Haines commented on 24 June about Darializa Avila Chevalier, a congressional candidate supported by Mamdani. Haines linked Chevalier to a pro-Palestinian demonstration that took place on 8 October 2023, the day after the Hamas attack on Israel. ‘I’m just going to flat-out call her an anti-Semite,’ Haines said during the broadcast, as also reported by Foxnews on Tuesday (7/7/2026). Semafor reported that a Mamdani aide subsequently conveyed objections to ABC executives, suggesting the statement could affect the likelihood of Mamdani or his endorsed candidates appearing on the programme in the future. The disagreement follows Mamdani’s growing political influence in the New York Democratic primaries, where three of his endorsed candidates—Brad Lander, Claire Valdez, and Darializa Avila Chevalier—won their races against other Democratic contenders. Semafor also reported that Mamdani’s team had previously offered ‘The View’ the opportunity to host a socialist candidate he supported, but the offer was declined. Neither the New York City Mayor’s Office nor ABC and ‘The View’ had issued an official statement at the time of reporting. Chevalier had previously drawn scrutiny over past social media posts that were later deleted. According to a CNN report, an account she managed contained expressions of support for communism and Marxist thought, described Karl Marx’s works as ‘required reading’, and quoted Assata Shakur, a fugitive convicted of murdering a police officer in the United States.
