Maluku's BKHIT and BPPMHKP Strengthen Competitiveness of Leading Fishery Products

The Maluku Animal, Fish and Plant Quarantine Agency (BKHIT) and the Ambon Marine and Fisheries Product Quality Control and Supervision Agency (BPPMHKP) are strengthening synergy to enhance the competitiveness of local leading fisheries, following an increase in Maluku’s fishery exports in recent years. Head of BKHIT Maluku Willy Indra Yunan stated in Ambon on Tuesday that inter-agency collaboration is necessary to ensure fishery products from Maluku meet health, food safety, and quality standards, thereby expanding access to both national and international markets. “The synergy between BKHIT Maluku and BPPMHKP Ambon is very important to support smooth service for business actors while increasing the competitiveness of Maluku’s leading fishery commodities,” he said. He explained that BKHIT is an implementing unit of the Indonesian Quarantine Agency tasked with carrying out quarantine measures on animals, fish, and plants, including supervising the traffic of pest and disease carriers, conducting commodity health inspections, issuing quarantine certification, and ensuring commodities in transit meet the requirements of destination countries. According to Willy, the roles of the two institutions complement each other in building a quality assurance system for fishery products from upstream to downstream, providing certainty for business actors while increasing market confidence in products from Maluku. He said the strengthened collaboration is supported by the continued growth of Maluku’s fishery export performance. Based on BKHIT Maluku data, the export volume of non-living fishery commodities in 2025 reached 10,234.06 tonnes, an increase of 27.21 percent compared to 8,045.32 tonnes in 2024. In addition to the volume increase, export value also rose from 44.79 million US dollars in 2024 to 54.30 million US dollars in 2025.
