The Ministry of Transmigration has stated that two regions in East Kalimantan, namely Maloy Kaliorang in Kutai Timur Regency and Keladen in Paser Regency, have been included in the priority list for the development of transmigration areas. This was announced by the Director General of Development and Expansion of Transmigration Areas, Sigit Mustofa Nuruddin, while accompanying the Deputy Minister of Transmigration, Viva Yoga Mauladi, during a rubber farming consultation in Sebuntal Village, Marangkayu District, Kutai Kartanegara, on Saturday (23/05/2026).

“In East Kalimantan, we have two large areas, namely in Paser and Kutai Timur,” said Sigit. He also noted that the Kutai Kartanegara region, where the event took place, was formerly a transmigration settlement area dating back to the 1980s. He added that these areas will be driven towards increasing community welfare in the future.

Meanwhile, Viva Yoga Mauladi noted that many rubber farmers in Indonesia originate from transmigration areas, particularly in Sumatra and Kalimantan. He stated that the number of rubber farming households in Indonesia reaches approximately 2.1 million. “These rubber farmers number around 2.1 million households across Indonesia, most of whom are spread across Sumatra and Kalimantan, and a large portion reside in transmigration areas,” said Viva.

He emphasised that this situation is a primary focus for the Ministry of Transmigration to improve the welfare of both current and former transmigration residents. Viva noted that enhancing welfare requires collaboration with other ministries, including the Ministry of Agriculture, BRIN (National Research and Innovation Agency), and the Ministry of Public Works. Additionally, the Ministry of Transmigration is exploring opportunities for intercropping patterns for rubber farmers in transmigration areas to supplement family incomes. “We could implement intercropping programmes to increase monthly family income, using crops such as maize, cardamom, and others that are suitable for the soil conditions,” Viva concluded.
