Malnutrition hits C. Java infants

SEMARANG, Central Java: A survey conducted by the provincial health office here found 55 infants and toddlers in Central Java suffering from severe malnutrition.

All aged under five years, the children live in 14 regencies in the province.

Head of the Central Java health office Soejono Hardjosoedarmo said the discovery was made during a province-wide survey conducted by the office since October.

Soejono said the children were given intensive treatment in local hospitals and health centers. He was confident they would recover.

"The general public can help prevent the prevalence of such conditions by monitoring their child's' diet and taking immediate action when they find a child whose weight is less than 70 percent its normal weight," he added. (har)
