Mall to increase congestion

From Kompas

We have lived in Cibubur, East Jakarta, since 1983, when the
area was still quiet, green and fresh without traffic jams. In
the past two years, Cibubur has seen congested roads stretching
from Lake Jamboree, now with various restaurants on its banks, to
Cileungsi, particularly on weekdays.

The jams are due to the rising number of commuters passing
through Cibubur from Depok and Cimanggis, West Java, besides the
fast growing housing complexes in Cileungsi. Meanwhile, the 3.2
hectares of vacant land near the Jagorawi tollgate, so far used
as a parking lot, will soon be the site of the Batavia Square
Mall project, with Carrefour hypermarket as the main tenant.

With this mall, traffic congestion in Cibubur will increase.
In addition, the roads will be teeming with sidewalk vendors,
hoodlums and pickpockets, causing a danger to surrounding
settlements, while minivans will also stop frequently and worsen
traffic. Most importantly, the amount of underground water will
be reduced, which could cause water shortages in the dry season.
