Malioboro Side Street Gates to Be Installed at 13 Points, Here Is the List

The Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY) government is finalising preparations for the 24-hour full pedestrianisation of the Malioboro area, which is targeted to take effect at the end of November 2026. One of the measures includes installing gates at 13 access points on the side streets of Malioboro. Head of the DIY Transportation Agency, Chrestina Erni Widyastuti, explained that the 13 points are connecting roads that provide direct access to the main Malioboro corridor. “The installation of gates on the Malioboro side streets, replacing damaged safety fences, began in June 2026. There are 13 road sections where gates will be installed,” she said when contacted on Sunday (5/7). “It seems almost all points have been installed, I will check again later,” Erni added. Erni stated that the gates are intended to prevent traffic violations by both two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles that frequently force their way into the main Malioboro corridor during pedestrian hours. The gates will also serve as an access management tool to strictly control vehicle circulation, keeping Malioboro free from traffic congestion. “The budget allocated for the gate installation is approximately Rp 230 million,” Erni explained. Looking ahead, once the full pedestrian scheme is enforced, a scheduled gate opening and closing system will be implemented, rather than a permanent restriction. However, priority emergency and public service vehicles such as ambulances and fire engines will still be able to pass through the gates freely. “For logistics loading and unloading vehicles, the government has established a special time scheme for business operators in Malioboro to load and unload goods, generally at night or in the early hours, so that economic activity is not paralysed. For morning operations, it will be before 09:00 WIB,” she detailed. Earlier observations on Thursday (2/7/2026) showed gates already installed at the entrance to Jalan Suryatmajan. The green-and-yellow gates, measuring approximately two to three metres in length, were placed on both the north and south sides of the road. The installation work appeared unfinished, and the gate posts were locked, preventing them from being lowered. Gates were also visible on Jalan Pajeksan. The 13 installation points are: 1. Jalan Suryatmajan (2 units), 8. Jalan Ketandan Kulon (1 unit), 9. Jalan Beskalan (1 unit), 10. Jalan Remujung (1 unit), 11. Jalan Pabringan (2 units), 12. Jalan Reksobayan Selatan (2 units), and 13. Jalan Sosromenduran (1 unit).
