Malioboro Goes Car-Free from 5 AM Every Weekend, Come Join the Fun!
The car-free day (CFD) activity in Malioboro, Yogyakarta, will now be held every Saturday and Sunday starting today. The event runs from 5 AM to 9 AM Western Indonesian Time (WIB). The pedestrian area in Malioboro will also be enlivened with a number of classes.
‘Car Free Day Malioboro is officially held every Saturday and Sunday, from 5 AM to 9 AM WIB,’ wrote the Yogyakarta City Government’s Cultural Heritage Area Management Unit (UPT PKCB) via its Instagram account @malioboro_uptpkcb on Friday (24/7/2026).
During the CFD, the Malioboro area is free of vehicles. Residents of Yogyakarta and tourists can take advantage of the moment to walk, cycle, exercise, or simply enjoy the more comfortable and healthy atmosphere of Malioboro without motorised vehicles. Visitors are reminded to obey the existing regulations, such as not smoking and not littering.
Every Saturday, the Malioboro area also offers ‘Sinau Ing Malioboro’ (Learning in Malioboro). This activity facilitates free learning in the pedestrian area in front of the Fort Vredeburg Museum. The event is held every Saturday from 7 AM to 9 AM WIB. Many classes are offered, including:
Sinau Njoged: Learning the basics of graceful traditional dance movements.
Sinau Aksara Jawa: Reacquainting participants with basic Javanese script and how to write it.
Sinau Dolanan Anak: Nostalgia for playing wooden spinning tops and other traditional games.
