The Yogyakarta Special Region Transportation Agency (Dishub DIY) is targeting the Malioboro area to be completely free of motorised becaks (bentor) and other motor vehicles by the end of November 2026. To support this policy, the government will also install prohibition information boards to make the area more orderly and comfortable for tourists. Head of the Yogyakarta Transportation Agency, Chrestina Erni Widyastuti, stated that the nearest target is to halt all bentor operations in the Malioboro area. Vehicles permitted to pass through will be limited to traditional pedal becaks, electric becaks, emergency vehicles, and Trans Jogja buses. “The nearest target is that by the end of November there will be no bentor in Malioboro. So only pedal becaks and electric becaks are allowed to pass, that is the nearest target. As for the target of having electric becaks, we will coordinate with partners to support these becaks,” Erni said during an interview following the handover of electric becaks from PT KAI and the destruction of motorised becaks at the Yogyakarta City Transportation Agency’s Motor Vehicle Testing Unit on Wednesday (3/6/2026). According to her, the prohibition applies not only to bentor but also to all motor vehicles not included in the exemption categories. This aligns with the implementation of a low emission zone (LEZ) in Malioboro. “Motor vehicles as well. Because it is a low emission zone there, only emergency vehicles, pedal becaks, electric becaks, and Trans Jogja are allowed to pass,” she said. “We are also working on Trans Jogja, there will be additional electric services so that the service becomes even better,” she added.
