Malili Customs Seize 25,000 Illegal Cigarettes in Joint Operation in Luwu
Malili Customs seized 25,620 illegal cigarettes in a market operation conducted in various areas of Luwu Regency, South Sulawesi, on 8-9 April 2026. This action formed part of Operation Gempur Rokok Ilegal and was carried out jointly with the Luwu Regency Civil Service Police Unit and the TNI from Subdenpom XIV/1-3 Palopo.
The Head of Malili Customs Office, Eri Utomo Partoyo, stated that the market operation focused not only on enforcement but also on educating the public. He emphasised the importance of active community involvement in preventing the circulation of illegal cigarettes.
“This operation is our step, together with law enforcement agencies, to fulfil our role as community protectors and to raise public awareness against buying or selling illegal cigarettes,” said Eri.
The joint team targeted several traditional markets, including Pasar Suli, Pasar Dadeko, Pasar Belopa, Pasar Cilallang, Pasar Lindajang, and Pasar Bajo. The seizures were made following information from local media regarding suspected circulation of illegal cigarettes in the area.
In addition to enforcement, officers provided outreach to traders and the public on the characteristics of illegal cigarettes and their impacts. Illegal cigarettes harm various parties, from compliant businesses, consumers, to the state due to reduced excise revenues.
Eri also revealed indications of illegal cigarette circulation through online transactions. “We found indications of illegal cigarette distribution via online transactions using false declaration methods,” said Eri.
All seized goods have been secured and will be processed further in accordance with applicable regulations. Malili Customs, together with the Luwu Regency Government, reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening synergy in law enforcement to protect the public and maintain state revenues.
