Male Performer in Banyuwangi's Viral 'Yang Wis Yang' Obscene Video Named as Suspect

Banyuwangi Police have named a vocational high school student, identified by the initials MD (17), as a suspect in the obscene video case that went viral with the moniker ‘yang wis yang’. The teenager has been detained since 1 August 2026.

Head of Criminal Investigation at Banyuwangi Police, Kompol Lanang Teguh Pambudi, stated that the suspect was named after police received a report from the parents of the female performer in the video. Investigators then conducted an inquiry by examining three witnesses and collecting a number of pieces of evidence.

‘The suspect was named based on the results of a case conference and the fulfilment of sufficient evidence,’ Lanang said on Wednesday (5/8).

According to Lanang, MD is charged with multiple articles related to alleged sexual intercourse with a child, namely Article 81 paragraph (2) of the Child Protection Law or Article 473 paragraph (4) of Law No. 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code in conjunction with Law No. 1 of 2026. Under these provisions, the suspect faces a minimum prison sentence of three years and a maximum of 15 years.

In addition to processing the male performer, police are now also hunting for the party who disseminated the video until it went viral on social media. Lanang emphasised that the handling of the disseminator is a separate case from the one ensnaring the performer in the video.

He said the disseminator would be processed under the Electronic Information and Transactions Law for allegedly distributing the content to the public domain.

‘We are currently investigating this. The case of spreading the video is a different matter from the one we are currently handling,’ he explained.

Meanwhile, MD had previously apologised through a clarification video. In the recording, he admitted to being the male performer in the circulating video.

‘I apologise for tarnishing the school’s name. I apologise to all my friends and everyone for committing an act that has become a hot topic of conversation among everyone,’ MD said in the video recording.

‘This apology is made without any coercion from any party,’ he added.

The case came to light after an audio recording with erotic nuances featuring the phrase ‘yang wis yang’ circulated widely on social media and was used as a background for various video posts. The audio clip is suspected to have originated from an obscene video involving two students.

The short video believed to be the source of the audio recording then spread widely through WhatsApp groups.

According to information gathered, the video initially circulated among student WhatsApp groups before spreading more widely, sparking public concern as it involved minors.

Kepala Kantor Kementerian Agama Kabupaten Banyuwangi, Chaironi Hidayat, confirmed that the female student suspected of being in the video officially withdrew from the madrasah on 21 July 2026.

Chaironi said the decision did not come from the school, but was a request from the parents following mediation and consultation with the Guidance and Counselling team.

‘Following the mediation and in-depth consideration with the BK team, the suspected student’s parents ultimately decided to submit a letter of withdrawal for their child from the madrasah. This step was taken in consideration of safeguarding the student’s psychological condition and maintaining a conducive learning environment at the madrasah,’ Chaironi explained on Monday (3/8).

He explained that the madrasah first received information about the video on 19 July 2026 at 20.00 WIB. The following day, the discipline team and the Deputy Head of Public Relations visited the student’s family home to seek clarification.

‘We have traced this from the school’s side, and this report was made based on the exact chronology from the school,’ Chaironi clarified.

The clarification results showed that the parents were aware of the incident and left the resolution to the school. Subsequently, on 21 July 2026, the family attended a guidance session with the BK team before finally submitting a withdrawal letter, which was approved by the madrasah on the same day.

Chaironi stressed that the incident recorded in the video occurred entirely outside the madrasah’s environment and supervision. Therefore, the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Banyuwangi and the school are asking the public to stop sharing the video to protect the child’s future.

‘The school emphasises that the incident in the viral video occurred completely outside the madrasah’s control, both in terms of location and time of occurrence. The madrasah and the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Banyuwangi hope the public can respond to this incident wisely and limit the redistribution of the video content to protect the future and psychological condition of the minor,’ Chaironi said.
