Kuala Lumpur (ANTARA) - The largest plastic packaging company in the Asia Pacific region from Malaysia has officially invested in the Industropolis Batang Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Central Java.

According to a statement from the Indonesian Consulate General in Penang, received in Kuala Lumpur on Friday, the total initial investment from the company, Thong Guan Industries Bhd, reached US$7 million, equivalent to approximately Rp115 billion.

Thong Guan Industries is the first Malaysian investor to invest in the Batang SEZ. The company will construct a factory on a five-hectare site to produce various plastic products including wrapping plastic, garbage plastic, and film plastic for both domestic and global markets.

The investment was formalised with the signing of an Industrial Land Utilisation Agreement (PPTI) between Thong Guan Industries Managing Director Dato' Ang Poon Chuan and Batang SEZ President Director Ngurah Wirawan, witnessed by Indonesian Consul General in Penang Wanton Saragih and Director from the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/BKPM, Saribua Siahaan, on Friday.

Wanton Saragih explained that the realisation of this investment was a tangible result of the Penang Consulate General's sustained efforts in actively promoting various Indonesian investment opportunities to the Malaysian business community.

"We hope this investment will create a domino effect in terms of job creation and national economic transformation based on downstreaming and industrialisation, in line with the policy direction of President Prabowo Subianto," Wanton said.

Batang Industropolis SEZ President Director Ngurah Wirawan stated that Thong Guan Industries' presence in the zone would further strengthen the Batang SEZ's appeal to global investors whilst creating employment opportunities and facilitating technology transfer.

"Thong Guan is no ordinary company. This is an industry giant entrusting its future to Batang. This is global validation of the Batang Industropolis SEZ's positioning as the most promising industrial zone in Southeast Asia. They have chosen the right place to invest," Ngurah said.

Meanwhile, Thong Guan Industries Managing Director Dato' Ang Poon stated that the company's investment in the Batang SEZ was aimed at expanding its production network in Southeast Asia whilst strengthening its position as a major player in the global plastic packaging industry.

"The Batang SEZ offers competitive advantages in infrastructure, investment incentives, and streamlined licensing that support export-oriented industrial expansion," he said.

Thong Guan Industries is one of the largest plastic packaging companies in the Asia Pacific, with existing operations in China. The company is renowned for its innovation in stretch film production, environmentally friendly plastic bags, and various flexible packaging solutions for industrial and consumer sectors. The company can produce up to 150,000 tonnes per year with an annual turnover of approximately Rp4.2 trillion.

The manufacturing facility being built by Thong Guan Industries at the Batang SEZ will adopt environmentally friendly technology, including energy-efficient machinery, plastic waste recycling, and internationally certified environmental management systems, as part of Thong Guan's commitment to green industry practices.
