KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): More than 200 people from various
opposition parties staged a peaceful antigovernment demonstration
in the Malaysian capital on Sunday to denounce the imposition of
higher toll rates.
Led by opposition leader Lim Kit Siang, the protesters, who
were mainly Malays and Chinese, shouted "reformasi", "Destroy
Mahathir" and "Remove the toll".
Passing motorists hooted as a tacit sign of support for the
demonstrators.
Sunday's antitoll protest at the Pahang tollgate near the
capital was watched by about 50 policemen. It is the fourth
demonstration aimed at organizing public support for a review and
renegotiation of highway privatization concessions.
