Malaysian tabloid cuts staff
MALAYSIA: Some 40 editorial staff on the Malaysian tabloid newspaper The Sun have been laid off by its publishers Sun Media Sdn Bhd, a union leader said Saturday.
K. Kanan, chairman of the National Union of Journalist (NUJ)- Sun branch said the news was broken to editorial staff late Friday.
"There was no indication or prior notice at all," he said.
"The management in the retrenchment letters cited economic difficulties and a need to scale down manpower to ensure optimal utilization of resources as its reason for the exercise."
The English-language daily hit the streets early 1994 and has a circulation of 70,000. -- AFP
