Malaysian sugar irks RI farmers
SAMARINDA, East Kalimantan: Sugar from Malaysia has been
circulating in several parts of this province amid a shortage of
local sugar, a local senior official said on Wednesday.
However, East Kalimantan industry, trade and cooperatives head
Irianto Lambrie said the sugar could not be categorized as an
illegal product, arguing that it had not been smuggled into
Indonesia in large amounts.
However, the circulation of Malaysian sugar has irked
Indonesian farmers as it is being sold for between only Rp 3,800
and Rp 4,200 per kilogram, while the price of local sugar is
between Rp 4,500 and Rp 4,800 per kilogram. --JP
