Malaysian police nab 600 illegals
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysian police rounded up more than 600
illegal immigrants, comprising Bangladeshis, Indonesians, Burmese
and Filipinos, following a swoop on a coastal town, officials
said yesterday.
The illegals, including 30 women, were spending their weekend
in the town of Klang in central Selangor state when police zoomed
in. Most of those caught were Bangladeshis.
"We were surprised at their large numbers as we only expected
to catch about 200," Ahmad Bakhtiar Sulaiman, a local police
official, said.
Bakhtiar said most the illegals were working in the outskirts
of Klang. Some were carrying forged travel documents, work
permits and Malaysian identity cards. "Action will be taken
against those with the forged documents while the rest will be
deported," he said.
