Malaysian PM to visit S. America

KUALA LUMPUR (AP): Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad will visit
Cuba, Chile, Uruguay and Argentina from Sept. 25 to Oct. 5 to
strengthen trade, investment and other ties between Malaysia and
these countries, a Foreign Ministry statement said yesterday.

Mahathir will head a large delegation of ministers, deputy
ministers, members of parliament, chief ministers of several
states, senior government officials and businesspeople, the
statement said.

In addition to accepting the invitation of President Carlos
Saul Menem to visit Argentina, Mahathir has also been invited to
speak at the inauguration of the Association of Southeast Asian
Nations (ASEAN)-Mercosur Business Council in Argentina.

It will be Mahathir's first official visit to Cuba and Uruguay
and his second to Chile after he was invited in 1991 to address
the 12th assembly of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council
(PECC).
