Kuala Lumpur (ANTARA) - Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that the realisation of Google’s $2 billion investment in Malaysia is progressing very encouragingly and has even exceeded initial expectations.

Anwar made the statement after holding a dialogue with Alphabet & Google President and Chief Investment Officer Ruth Porat and her team via video conference from Malaysia on Thursday.

“I had a video call with Ruth Porat, President and Chief Investment Officer of Alphabet & Google, and her team. Among the topics discussed was the progress of Google’s $2 billion investment in Malaysia, which was announced in May 2024,” Anwar said in a press statement.

“This investment includes the construction and operation of Google’s first data centre and cloud services in Malaysia,” he said.

He said that the project is expected to generate an economic impact of $3.2 billion and create 26,500 job opportunities by 2030.

The investment, he said, is in line with Malaysia’s aspiration to emerge as a regional hub for secure data flows, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence innovation.

“The government remains committed to facilitating and providing the necessary support platform to ensure that the announced investment can be implemented quickly and effectively,” he said.

Anwar welcomed Google’s desire to continue exploring additional investment opportunities in Malaysia in the future.
