Malaysian PM Emphasises Dialogue on South China Sea

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has emphasised the importance of dialogue and compliance with international law in maintaining regional peace and stability, including in the South China Sea. PM Anwar said Malaysia has maintained meaningful engagement with China despite maritime disputes in the South China Sea. “Personally, I do not have a phobia about potential threats in the South China Sea. Yes, there are issues, but so far Malaysia’s position and experience, arguably, has been a meaningful exchange with China,” Anwar Ibrahim said during a discussion at the 39th Asia-Pacific Roundtable (APR) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Thursday. He rejected the notion that conflict in the South China Sea is unavoidable. Anwar stressed that dialogue, mutual trust, and adherence to international law are crucial for maintaining regional peace and stability. “I have discussed it with President Xi Jinping, with Premier Li Qiang; but our relationship is very good. There is not a single question or major issue that could cause tension,” he added. Anwar also cautioned against focusing too heavily on narratives overly centred on the prospect of war in the region. According to him, ASEAN must remain committed to diplomacy. Malaysia, together with ASEAN, stated it will continue to advocate for the reform of global multilateral institutions, including the UN and the World Trade Organisation. Regarding the Cambodia-Thailand border issue, Anwar welcomed both countries’ commitment to continue negotiations and described many border disputes in the region as a historical legacy from the colonial era. He is confident that sustained dialogue and mutual trust will ultimately enable both parties to reach a peaceful resolution.
