Malaysian PM Emphasises Dialogue on South China Sea

Kuala Lumpur (ANTARA) - Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has emphasised the importance of dialogue and compliance with international law in maintaining regional peace and stability, including in the South China Sea.

PM Anwar stated that Malaysia has maintained meaningful engagement with China despite maritime disputes in the South China Sea.

“Personally, I do not have a phobia regarding potential threats in the South China Sea. Yes, there are indeed issues, but so far Malaysia’s position and experience can be described as having meaningful exchanges with China,” said Anwar Ibrahim during a discussion at the 3rd Asia-Pacific Roundtable (APR) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Thursday.

He rejected the notion that conflict in the South China Sea is inevitable. Anwar emphasised that dialogue, mutual trust, and adherence to international law are crucial for maintaining regional peace and stability.

“I have discussed this with President (China) Xi Jinping and Premier (China) Li Qiang; our relations are very good. There is not a single question or major issue that could cause tension,” he added.

Anwar also cautioned against focusing too heavily on narratives centred on the prospect of war in the region. According to him, ASEAN must remain committed to diplomacy.

Malaysia, alongside ASEAN, stated it will continue to advocate for the reform of global multilateral institutions, including the United Nations and the World Trade Organisation.

Regarding the Cambodia-Thailand border issue, Anwar welcomed the commitment of both nations to continue negotiations, describing many regional border disputes as historical legacies of the colonial era.

He expressed confidence that ongoing dialogue and mutual trust would ultimately enable both parties to achieve a peaceful resolution.
