Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim Hospitalised for Medical Check-up

Malaysian Prime Minister (PM) Anwar Ibrahim is currently being treated in hospital. He is undergoing medical examinations and procedures, and is expected to remain under the medical team’s observation for two days.

Anwar is “undergoing examinations and procedures prescribed by the medical expert team”, said Press Secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah in a statement, without providing further details.

“Let us pray… may he be blessed with good health so that he can return to his duties as usual in the near future,” the statement added, as reported by Reuters news agency on Monday (10/8/2026).

The Malaysian PM’s Office did not provide details regarding the health issue Anwar is facing.

Anwar, who turned 79 on Monday (10/8) and has served since 2022, has previously experienced recurring shoulder and back problems.

He was hospitalised in 2018 due to shoulder and back pain. Last November, he cancelled a trip to the state of Pahang due to back pain.

In January, he was declared healthy after undergoing a routine medical check-up, according to a hospital statement.

Earlier on Saturday (8/8), Anwar had an audience with the King of Malaysia, Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar. Following the meeting, Sultan Ibrahim issued a Royal statement including regarding the arrest of Malaysia Airlines pilot Mohd Saufi bin Othman in Indonesia for alleged possession of 26 kilograms of drugs.

Sultan Ibrahim ordered the authorities to tighten surveillance at all airports and the country’s borders.

Sultan Ibrahim said this measure is necessary to prevent drug smuggling and cross-border criminal activities that threaten public safety and security.
