Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim Hospitalised for Medical Check-Up

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is currently hospitalised and undergoing medical examinations and procedures by his team of medical specialists.

Citing The Star Malaysia, his office announced that Anwar is undergoing two days of medical observation. The statement did not disclose details about the nature of the examinations or procedures being carried out.

“The Prime Minister is currently undergoing examinations and procedures as determined by his team of medical specialists,” said his senior press secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah.

The government has also called on the public to pray that Anwar’s medical examinations and procedures proceed smoothly, and that he is blessed with good health.

“We pray that all matters relating to the Prime Minister’s examinations and procedures are made easy and that he is always granted good health so that he can return to his duties as usual in the near future, God willing,” Tunku Nashrul added.

Anwar Ibrahim turned 79 years old today. He has served as prime minister since November 2022.

The announcement comes amid rising political tensions in the country, with the Democratic Action Party (DAP), the largest party in Anwar’s governing coalition, set to hold a vote on 16 August.

The vote will determine whether its leaders will retain their cabinet positions. The decision was announced by DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke on Tuesday, following a decline in public support for the party and the government coalition after a series of defeats in state elections.

Since Anwar Ibrahim became prime minister in November 2022, Malaysia’s economic performance has been relatively strong, particularly in 2024-2025, despite ongoing fiscal challenges and external pressures. Malaysia’s GDP grew by 5.80% in the second quarter of 2026 compared with the same period a year earlier.
