Banyuwangi, East Java (ANTARA News) - Malaysian food producing company PT Adabi became interested in producing seaweed being cultivated by fishermen in Wongsorejo aubdistrict, Banyuwangi regency, E Java.

"PT Adabi planned to produce seaweed into raw material of its food industry," head of the farmers empowerment division of the Banyuwangi Marine and Fisheries Agency Suryono Bintang Samudra said Wednesday.

Suryono said he has coordinated with the fishermen in Wongsorejo to raise seaweed cultivation for exports to Malaysia.

"Banyuwangi waters are highly potential for seaweed cultivation, as of the 4,100 ha of the potential breeding grounds, only 10 pct had been cultivated producing 10 to 13 tons per day," he said.

The seaweed production reached 20 tons per day.

Banyuwangi regency has at least three sibdistricts as seaweed production centers, nameky Wongsorejo, Muncar and Pesanggaran.
