Malaysian Cabinet Holds Emergency Meeting Over MAS Pilot Smuggling Ecstasy into Indonesia

The case of a Malaysian co-pilot caught attempting to smuggle ecstasy into Indonesia has drawn serious attention from the Malaysian government. The matter was reported and discussed specifically during a cabinet meeting in Putrajaya on Wednesday (5/8).

Communications Minister and Malaysian Government Spokesman Fahmi Fadzil confirmed that the cabinet had received a report on the incident. Information was gathered from the Home Ministry and the Transport Ministry to formulate mitigation measures.

“In connection with the detention of the MAS (Malaysia Airlines) co-pilot in Jakarta, the cabinet has received information that several corrective measures need to be implemented immediately,” Fahmi said during an online press conference monitored from Kuala Lumpur.

Fahmi explained that the case is still under active investigation by Indonesian authorities. The Malaysian government said it will conduct a thorough review after receiving a complete report from Indonesia before deciding on further legal or diplomatic action.

As a preventive measure, Malaysia is considering assigning police officers specifically within Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). The move is intended to tighten oversight and prevent similar incidents from recurring in the future.

In addition to strengthening airport security, the Malaysian government is also urging the airline to carry out systemic improvements. One of the main points is to tighten the selection and supervision process for flight crew to ensure the integrity of the national carrier’s personnel.
