Malaysian authorities lift tsunami warning for Sabah coast
Kuala Lumpur (ANTARA) - The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET) has ended the warning regarding the potential for a tsunami on the coast of Sabah, Malaysia, following a strong earthquake that occurred in Mindanao, Philippines, on Monday morning. βThe tsunami warning issued at 08:36 am on 8 June 2026 was ended at 12:00 pm on 8 June 2026,β stated a release from MET Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur on Monday. MET Malaysia stated that further announcements will be published if there are further developments regarding the earthquake in the Philippines. Previously, MET Malaysia issued a warning of a potential tsunami in the coastal regions of Sabah due to a magnitude 7.9 earthquake in Mindanao, Philippines. Separately, the Indonesian representative in Kinabalu also stated they are continuing to monitor announcements made by Malaysian authorities regarding the impact of the Philippine earthquake on the potential tsunami in Sabah. Sabah is a Malaysian territory that directly borders North Kalimantan, Indonesia.
