Malaysia, Yogyakarta artists foster ties with workshops, discussions

The public will have the opportunity to view the works of
Yogyakartan and visiting Malaysian artists in two exhibitions,
following a week of workshops and discussions between the two
groups.

The works will first be displayed at the residence of Maestro
Djoko Pekik in Sembungan village, Kasihan, Bantul, from Aug. 29,
and will move to the Pitoe Gallery on Jl. Prawirotaman in
Yogyakarta starting Sept. 2.

The Malaysians, from the art group Matahati, are Hamir Soib,
Akhmad Syukri Mohammed, Masnoramli Mahmud, Bayu Utomo Radjikin
and Ahmad Fuad Othman. They have worked together with Yogyakartan
artists Januri, Agus Purnomo, Yaksa Agus and Eddy Sulistyo. The
joint workshop was second of its kind after the first organized
in March last year.

Artist Agus Yaksa said on Friday the artists worked on two big
themes, Seni Rupa Halaman (Outdoor Fine Art) and Seni Rupa
Ruangan (Indoor Fine Art).

"We tried to create art works using materials available around
us, in our backyard," Agus said.

Several young artists, Anang Jugo, Tasiman, Ayu Arista Murti
and Hardiana, also took part in the week-long workshops as
observers.

"For the opening ceremony at Djoko Pekik's residence, we are
inviting stage actors Djemek Supardi and Nanoe." The event was
open to the public, he said. --JP
