Malaysia wins trophy in Dhaka

DHAKA (AFP): Malaysia on Friday clinched the Bangabandhu Cup
Silver Jubilee of Independence soccer tournament defeating
Indonesia 2-1 in the final at Dhaka Stadium.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed attended the
match between Malaysia Red and Indonesia's PSM (Ujungpandang)
Soccer Club.

Teams from India, Iran, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Russia,
Thailand and host Bangladesh took part in the 11-day tournament.

The Malaysian Red and Indonesian PSM reached the final earlier
this week defeating two of Bangladesh's most popular soccer teams
-- Mohammedan Sporting Club and Abahani Krira Chakra.

The tournament was organized as part of last month's silver
jubilee celebrations in Bangladesh which gained independence from
Pakistan in 1971 after an Indian-backed nine-month liberation
war.
