Kuala Lumpur (ANTARA) - Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to take firm measures in response to attacks affecting the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) peacekeeping group.

“Malaysia urges the United Nations Security Council to take decisive action, including ensuring immediate protection for UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon,” stated the Malaysian Foreign Ministry, or Wisma Putra, in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.

Malaysia has firmly condemned the ongoing attacks on UNIFIL peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, which have resulted in the deaths and injuries of several UN personnel, including the latest incident on Friday (3/4) in El Addaiseh that injured three Indonesian peacekeepers.

Malaysia stated that these attacks constitute serious violations of international law. The parties responsible must be held accountable.

“We call on all parties to ensure the safety of UN personnel and to reaffirm the importance of respecting the immunity and integrity of UN missions,” Wisma Putra stated.

Malaysia declared that the deliberate attacks on UNIFIL peacekeepers represent serious violations of international humanitarian law and UNSC Resolution 1701.

Meanwhile, Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono, in his latest statement, has also urged the UN to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of safety aspects for peacekeepers in various mission areas, particularly in the UNIFIL mission in Lebanon.

Foreign Minister Sugiono emphasised this following the deaths of three TNI soldiers on UNIFIL duty in Lebanon: Major Inf. Anumerta Zulmi Aditya Iskandar, Serka Anumerta Muhammad Nur Ichwan, and Kopda Anumerta Farizal Rhomadon.

In addition to the three fallen personnel, Sugiono revealed that three others were injured.

The Indonesian government has demanded security guarantees for all peacekeepers following the attack that killed three TNI personnel in Lebanon.

“There must be a security guarantee for the peacekeeping soldiers because they are maintaining peace. They are peacekeeping, not peacemaking,” Foreign Minister Sugiono said.
