Malaysia opens US$75m F1 track
KUALA LUMPUR (AP): Formula One champion Mika Hakkinen test- drove Malaysia's new US$75 million track ahead of its official opening ceremony Tuesday.
"The layout is one of the best in the world," Hakkinen said in a meeting with Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad after the test run.
"There are twists and turns and the entire course is very hilly. This will make for a thrilling race in October," Hakkinen said in a statement.
Dubbed the "circuit in the forest" for its site in the rain forest 80 kilometers outside Kuala Lumpur, the track is slated for the Formula One race in October and the World 500cc Grand Prix motorcycle championship in April.
