Malaysia Negotiates 500,000 Tonnes of Indonesian Rice at Rp8 Trillion

Jakarta, KOMPAS.com - A Malaysian businessman is reported to have offered to purchase premium Indonesian rice at Rp16,000 per kilogram. Bulog’s President Director Ahmad Rizal Ramdhani said the Malaysian company intends to import 500,000 tonnes of premium Indonesian rice. ‘Alhamdulillah, there is already an agreement. So they will import a sizable amount around 500,000 tonnes,’ Rizal said when approached in the Kuningan area, Jakarta, on Friday (22 May 2026).

Rizal noted Bulog officials had met with the buyer in Surabaya, East Java, some time ago. The Malaysian side asked Indonesia to release the rice at Rp16,000 per kilogram. If the deal proceeds, Indonesia’s rice exports to Malaysia would be worth about Rp8 trillion.

The rice to be purchased is premium rice with a 5 percent broken rate. ‘Yes, correct, the initial offer from the Malaysian side is around Rp16,000, or about 3.7 Ringgit,’ Rizal added.

In the near term, Bulog will send one of its directors or staff to Sarawak, Malaysia. They will discuss the technical delivery of rice from Indonesia, including whether shipments should be by sea or by land. By sea, shipments would be port to port; by land, deliveries would pass through the Kalimantan border at Pontianak, Pontianak depot crossing into Entikong, and from Entikong directly to Sarawak,’ Rizal said.

Previously, negotiations for exporting Indonesian premium rice to Malaysia were conveyed by Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman.
