Malaysia Masters 2026: Jonatan Christie and Ubed Through to the Quarterfinals
Indonesia’s men’s singles badminton players Jonatan Christie and Mohammad Zaki Ubaidillah (Ubed) are showing no signs of slowing at the Malaysia Masters 2026. The fourth seed, Jojo, secured a quarter-final berth after overcoming Taiwan’s Wang Po-Wei in a tight three-game match at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, winning 21-16, 19-21, 21-13 in 66 minutes. The early lead in the first game gave way to a spirited battle as Wang briefly led 2-1 before Christie produced a five-point burst to turn the tables and cruise to the opening game.
Entering the second game, the tension rose. The players traded points early on, with the score level at 1-1 and 3-3. Christie did appear to have control when leading 13-10, but Wang then reeled off six consecutive points to overturn the deficit and take the second game. In the decider, Christie regained momentum, sprinting to a 7-1 advantage. Wang fought back to reduce the gap to 12-10, yet Christie’s solid play prevented a late-scare and the Indonesian closed out the match.
In the quarter-finals on Friday (22/5), Christie will face Hu Zhe An of China, who progressed after a three-game win over Frenchman Alex Lanier: 15-21, 21-16, 21-15.
Keen to continue the Indonesian momentum, Ubed also moved into the quarter-finals after defeating Korea’s Jeon Hyeok Jin in a three-game thriller: 21-10, 16-21, 21-16. Ubed will meet Christo Popov, who knocked out another Indonesian, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, in straight games (21-17, 21-14).
He noted that the current conditions oblige badminton fans to be realistic about the coming years, with regeneration not being instantaneous. Christie, who lost his opening match to Christo Popov (19-21, 14-21), was followed by Alwi Farhan’s defeat to Alex Lanier, which dropped Indonesia to third in the group standings and eliminated them despite two wins over Algeria and Thailand. The Indonesian Thomas Cup team also suffered a 0-3 defeat to France in the group phase of the 2026 Thomas Cup after the three singles players faltered.
Axelsen’s retirement is predicted to open up opportunities for players such as Ginting, Jojo, and Kunlavut Vitidsarn to dominate the upper echelons of the BWF rankings.
Ubed later defeated Thailand’s Panitchaphon Teeraratsakul in the Bangkok BAC 2026 round of 32. Indonesia’s Mohammad Zaki Ubaidillah (Ubed) reached the main draw of the BAC 2026 after sweeping the qualifying rounds in Ningbo. While not yet a deep run, Ubed says he has gained valuable lessons after returning to face elite seeds. Facing the Chinese top seed Li Shi Feng, Ubed acknowledged the opponent’s superiority in a tightly contested three-game match.
