Malaysia deputy PM pays old fines
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia's deputy prime minister, a strong supporter of a police crackdown on unpaid traffic fines, has discovered he himself was on the list of offenders.
Abdullah Ahmad Badawi made the startling discovery when he dropped in unexpectedly at a traffic police station in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday, a newspaper and his aides said on Wednesday.
He found details of the unpaid speeding tickets when he checked his own details on the computer, The Sun said.
Aides said Abdullah's official drivers or family members could have committed the offenses in vehicles registered under the name of the deputy premier, who is also in charge of the police.
They said Abdullah immediately paid the tickets issued last year.
