Kuala Lumpur (ANTARA) - Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has appreciated Pakistan’s initiative to host a dialogue between the United States and Iran.

“I commend Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan and the leaders of other friendly nations who have stepped forward,” Anwar stated in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday (25/3).

He assessed that Pakistan’s position as a partner to various parties and a credible voice in the Muslim world plays an important role in promoting meaningful negotiations.

Malaysia, Anwar said, supports this initiative and encourages the United States and Iran to respond positively.

He believes there is still room for diplomacy that must be utilised seriously.

“Every negotiation must be conducted on the basis of sincere intentions: a clear commitment to ending the conflict, not merely managing its rhythm for tactical gains,” he said.

Anwar stated that the international community has too often witnessed ceasefires that are merely pauses, not solutions.

He also affirmed Iran’s right to defend its sovereignty in accordance with international law.

However, Malaysia continues to call on all parties to exercise restraint and protect civilians and infrastructure in neighbouring countries, particularly in the Gulf region.

“Gulf countries, the region, and the world have much at stake—economically, socially, and in terms of long-term stability—and their people must not bear the consequences of decisions taken elsewhere,” Anwar said.

He also highlighted the importance of consistency in applying international law.

According to Anwar, international law must not be applied selectively.

He mentioned that in recent days, he has discussed the situation with leaders from various countries, including Indonesia, to understand the circumstances and promote de-escalation.

“Malaysia will continue to support every credible effort towards just and sustainable peace,” he said.
