Malaysia and Thailand Discuss Trade Cooperation and Regional Connectivity

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul held talks on trade cooperation and regional connectivity during their meeting in Putrajaya, Malaysia, on Thursday. Anwar Ibrahim stated that the meeting further strengthened the long-standing friendship and commitment of Malaysia and Thailand to continue reinforcing their Strategic Partnership for peace, prosperity, and the well-being of both nations. “Discussions focused on cooperation in various fields, including trade and investment, border area development, security, agriculture and food security, tourism, the halal industry, and the semiconductor industry,” Anwar explained. He also noted an emphasis on accelerating the implementation of various regional connectivity projects, including the ASEAN Power Grid, as well as strengthening connectivity at the Malaysia-Thailand border, specifically at Rantau Panjang–Sungai Golok, to facilitate the mobility of people and encourage cross-border economic activity. Malaysia and Thailand also agreed to expedite the implementation of various initiatives approved through existing cooperation mechanisms so that the benefits can be immediately felt by the people of both countries. PM Anutin expressed appreciation for Malaysia’s active role in promoting dialogue and peace efforts in the region, including support for the peace process between Thailand and Cambodia. “We also exchanged views on various regional issues, including developments in Myanmar and efforts to maintain peace in Southern Thailand, based on the ASEAN spirit that always prioritises dialogue, mutual understanding, and peaceful resolution,” said Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar stated that Malaysia-Thailand relations will continue to be strengthened based on a spirit of mutual respect, trust, and commitment to exploring more cooperation opportunities that provide tangible benefits to the people of both countries and regional prosperity.
