JAKARTA - The Malang Swamp City Forest in Semper Timur, Cilincing, North Jakarta, is not only filled with shady trees but also features a small lake and compost processing facilities.

Coordinator of Internal Security for City Forests across Cilincing, Heriyana, stated that the area was previously a landfill site, which has been gradually developed into a city forest since 2012.

“Starting in 2012, trees were planted, including special protective trees here. About 5 hectares are fully covered with trees, because nearly 1 hectare has a lake—there’s a lake back there, which functions for water absorption,” she said when met by Kompas.com on Wednesday (22/4/2026).

Security officer at Malang Swamp City Forest, Saddam, explained that the compost produced on site is used for the needs of parks in the North Jakarta area.

“Oh, for that, there’s also compost making here, and plant nursery activities are also carried out here by PJLP,” he said when met by Kompas.com at the location on Wednesday (22/4/2026).

“Usually for the needs of the North Jakarta Parks Sub-District Office. So, in a manner of speaking, we make it here, and if parks or green corridors need compost, it will be sent from here upon request,” he continued.

“In the front for the tree plants, and at the back there’s also a lake. For the facilities, currently, there’s a field at the back, and in the front, there’s a children’s playground for kids to play,” he added.

Nevertheless, the Malang Swamp City Forest is considered not easily accessible to the public due to the damaged condition of the roads leading to the location and its relatively remote position.

“Well, for the crowds, it’s relatively busy but not that much because this place is, so to speak, remote,” said Saddam.

“Well, the hope is that the relevant government parties or the provincial government, the related agencies, can improve the road access. So that residents can be more comfortable coming here for tourism,” he added.

Previously reported, the Malang Swamp City Forest covers about 5.7 hectares and has been cleared and planted with trees gradually since 2012.

Although it has a large area and adequate facilities, this area remains relatively quiet with few visitors due to inadequate road access.
