Malang, East Java — The Malang Regency Government has welcomed the central government’s plan to implement a waste-to-energy (WtE) facility development project to process waste into electrical power (PSEL).

Malang Regent M Sanusi announced in Malang Regency, East Java, on Tuesday that confirmation of Malang’s selection for the PSEL development was received following a meeting with the Ministry of Environment.

“Based on the agreement reached during our meeting with the Environment Minister, the PSEL originally planned for Malang City was ultimately relocated to Malang Regency. We are grateful that Malang Regency will also receive this assistance,” Sanusi said.

Sanusi stated that the PSEL initiative aligns with the Ministry of Home Affairs’ policy to support regions with daily waste accumulation of 1,000 tonnes by providing incineration technology support.

He indicated that the PSEL development process is scheduled to commence this year.

The use of incineration technology would not cause air pollution, he noted, as the technology is designed to meet emission control standards and is environmentally safe.

“The technology is specifically designed so that waste incineration does not cause environmental pollution,” he said.

Waste processed at the facility will be converted into electrical energy.

The investment value for the PSEL development is estimated at between Rp2 trillion and Rp3 trillion. Project funding is sourced from Danantara, whilst the regional government’s responsibility includes preparing the location and supporting project implementation.

Malang Regency is currently preparing several potential locations for the project, including an area near the Pakis Toll Exit in Pakis District.

“There is approximately six hectares of land there that could be utilised,” Sanusi said.

The PSEL facility is projected to address waste management issues not only for one district but across the greater Malang metropolitan region.

Waste supplies will be received from Malang City and Batu City.
