Malang Police Investigate Firecracker Explosion at Home That Killed One Person
Malang, East Java — Malang Police are continuing their investigation into an alleged firecracker explosion at a residential home in Jenggolo Village, Kepanjen District, Malang Regency, East Java, which resulted in one fatality.
AKP Bambang Subinanjar, Head of the Public Relations Section of Malang Police, stated in Malang on Sunday that during the initial investigation and crime scene examination, the criminal investigation unit secured a bucket containing firecrackers from the location.
“We have secured evidence consisting of firecrackers of various sizes. Investigators are currently looking into the exact cause of the explosion, including the origin of the gunpowder used by the victim,” said Bambang.
The deceased victim, identified as S (48), was the owner of the residence.
Bambang reported that the explosion occurred on Saturday (23 May) at approximately 11.15 a.m. local time.
At that moment, residents in the surrounding area suddenly heard an explosion sound from inside the victim’s home. They immediately rushed to the location to investigate the source of the noise.
Upon arrival, residents found S had sustained severe burns in several areas of the body, including the legs, hands, chest, abdomen and face.
After receiving the report, a team from Malang Police together with Kepanjen Police Station were dispatched to the scene.
Bambang reported that upon arrival at the crime scene, officers immediately assisted in evacuating the victim to Kanjuruhan General Hospital in Malang Regency for urgent medical treatment. However, approximately two hours later, S was pronounced dead.
Police also requested a forensic examination and autopsy for investigative purposes, but this was declined by the victim’s family.
“The family has accepted this incident and does not wish for an autopsy to be performed. Nevertheless, we will continue our investigation to fully establish the sequence of events,” said Bambang.
