The Jalan Gadang-Bumiayu improvement project commenced on 15 June 2026, marked by a prayer and thanksgiving ceremony at the Gadang Wholesale Market (PIG) attended by Malang Mayor Wahyu Hidayat. The project aims to improve traffic flow from the Gadang intersection to Bumiayu and follows the relocation of the market, which had been a source of public complaint.

Mayor Wahyu stated that the work order (SPK) has been signed, with the contract targeting completion by the end of November 2026. However, he has requested the contractor finish within 150 days to allow time for evaluation and any necessary refinements. The project begins with the construction of drainage channels, each one metre wide and deep, followed by road resurfacing.

During construction, a stop-and-go traffic system will be in place, causing disruption to road users. The Transportation Agency has been instructed to manage traffic engineering to maintain vehicle circulation. The Mayor appealed for public understanding, assuring residents that the road will remain usable, albeit less smoothly than usual, and that the benefits will be felt after November.

Beyond road quality improvements, the project includes reorganising the area around the Gadang Wholesale Market. A median with gardens and greenery will be built in the middle of the road to create a more shaded and orderly environment. The city government will also install BRC (British Reinforced Concrete) fencing with precast foundations along the market area to prevent roadside buying and selling from vehicles, a practice that has contributed to congestion. The Mayor emphasised that the road must be used strictly for traffic, requiring shoppers to park and enter the market.

The works will also cover connecting roads and bridges from the Gadang intersection to the Bumiayu intersection. Regarding traders who have yet to move to the new location, the Mayor confirmed that all must be relocated by 20 June 2026 at the latest, as some are awaiting completion of the market’s southern area. He has instructed the Head of the Cooperatives, Industry, and Trade Agency to enforce this deadline so that the market area reorganisation can proceed as planned. The Mayor expressed hope that the project will be completed on schedule, providing residents with a more comfortable, smooth, and congestion-free road, as well as a more orderly and safe trading environment.
