Making Hijrah a Foundation for Meaningful Education
The Institute for Islamic Studies Development (LPSI) of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (UAD) organised an Islamic New Year 1448 Hijriah study session on Thursday, 18 June 2026, at the UAD Islamic Center Mosque. The event, themed ‘Islamic New Year: A Momentum for Family Hijrah from Routine to Meaningful Education’, was attended by lecturers and educational staff (tendik) of UAD.
In his remarks, the Head of LPSI UAD, H. Rahmadi Wibowo S., Lc., M.A. M.Hum., Ph.D., reported on the programmes of LAZISMU UAD. From January to May 2026, LAZISMU UAD collected zakat amounting to Rp123,485,259.80 and infaq totalling Rp1,025,522,976.30. These funds were distributed across four main pillars: education, social-dakwah, humanitarian aid, and health, with total disbursements reaching Rp977,946,851.00. ‘A total of 5,588 beneficiaries have felt the impact of these programmes, including stranded travellers (ibnu sabil), the poor, and those fighting in the path of Allah (fisabilillah). There are also flagship programmes such as LUNASMU for lecturers and staff facing financial difficulties, the Mentari Putra Bhakti Scholarship for children of permanent lecturers and staff, and the Sang Surya Cendekia Scholarship for lecturers pursuing doctoral studies,’ he explained.
Meanwhile, UAD’s Vice Rector for Al-Islam and Muhammadiyah Studies (AIK), Dr. H. Nur Kholis, S.Ag., M.Ag., stressed that hijrah is not merely a physical relocation but also a change in perspective, habits, and quality of life. In the family context, he said, hijrah means transforming the home into a place where faith, knowledge, manners, compassion, and responsibility grow. ‘In the context of higher education, UAD employees are not just working on campus but carrying out an educational mandate. Lecturers educate through teaching, community service, and research. Educational staff educate through service, administrative order, friendliness, thoroughness, and dedication in performing their duties. Therefore, hijrah in the campus environment means moving from working merely to fulfil obligations to working with the consciousness of worship,’ he stated.
In her sermon, Dr. apt. Salmah Orbayinah, M.Kes., conveyed that the 1st of Muharram is an opportune moment for self-reflection and evaluation, just as the Prophet Muhammad’s migration from Mecca to Medina marked the beginning of the Islamic calendar. She explained that contemporary hijrah must not be limited to changes in appearance but must encompass hijrah of belief, thought, and behaviour. ‘Hijrah of belief means affirming Allah SWT as the sole place of refuge, dependence, supplication, protection, and request. Hijrah of thought requires every Muslim to make the Qur’an and Sunnah the foundation of their thinking, ensuring all ideologies and worldviews remain within the corridor of Allah’s revelation. Meanwhile, hijrah of behaviour is manifested through a change in attitude towards becoming a better person, including providing optimal service and being a role model in the workplace,’ she clarified.
