MAKI Urges DPR to Immediately Pass Asset Forfeiture Bill: Corruption is Severe

The Indonesian Anti-Corruption Society (MAKI) is urging the House of Representatives (DPR) to immediately pass the Asset Forfeiture Bill. MAKI has given a deadline until the end of 2026. “I demand that the DPR immediately show proof and pass it. Because this bill has been mature since 2008, it just needs to be ratified,” said MAKI Coordinator Boyamin Saiman when contacted on Wednesday (15/7/2026). He stated that the longer the discussion drags on, the more substance will be cut from the bill. He also highlighted the DPR’s preoccupation with the nomenclature of the bill. “So I am just waiting, hopefully it will be passed this year, by the end of the year,” he said. He mentioned that Commission III of the DPR had promised to complete the Asset Forfeiture Bill since August 2025. However, until now, that promise has not been realised. “If it is not passed by the end of this year, then next year I will go to the Constitutional Court to order the DPR/government to pass it within one year. Even though it is somewhat delayed, I have been threatening this since last January, but because they said it would be passed, I waited first,” he said. He reminded that corruption is currently increasingly acute. According to him, there is no other way but to pass the Asset Forfeiture Bill. “Because this corruption is already severe, there is no other great way except through the Asset Forfeiture Law. Other methods like law enforcement and supervision are no longer effective,” he added. Commission III of the DPR is continuing the discussion of the Asset Forfeiture Bill. Chairman of Commission III of the DPR, Habiburokhman, emphasised that his party will discuss the bill to the fullest extent. This was conveyed by Habiburokhman during a Public Hearing Meeting (RDPU) with the Indonesian Advocates Association (Peradi). Habiburokhman dismissed the notion that Commission III of the DPR is rejecting the discussion of the Asset Forfeiture Bill. “We are going full throttle, using turbo speed, in discussing the drafting of the Asset Forfeiture Bill, so it is not true that the DPR is refusing to discuss the Asset Forfeiture Bill. The fact is we are presenting the best advocates who truly understand law enforcement in Indonesia to give their opinions,” said Habiburokhman in a meeting at the parliament complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Monday (13/7). Habiburokhman confirmed that Commission III of the DPR discusses the bill almost every day. The Gerindra Party Vice Chairman said this discussion is important because the Asset Forfeiture Bill is a new regulatory draft. “Why do we need to listen to the aspirations of many people regarding this law to the fullest? Why? Because this is something new, we are not making an amendment to a law, but we are creating a new law based on new thinking as well,” he said.
