Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Anti-Corruption Society (MAKI) supports the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in achieving even greater success in carrying out its duty to eradicate corruptors and in safeguarding the feelings of the Indonesian people by avoiding strange actions or blunders such as the transfer of detention for Yaqut Cholil Qoumas. As a form of support, MAKI sent five banners containing awards to the KPK for breaking the record of “Transfer of House Detention for Special Persons,” which were displayed at the KPK’s Red and White Building in Jakarta on Tuesday. “This serves as a reminder to the KPK not to toy with the feelings of the public. The Indonesian people are too intelligent; it’s not just MAKI,” said MAKI Coordinator Boyamin Saiman. According to Boyamin, the KPK’s action in returning Yaqut Cholil Qoumas (Gus Yaqut) to routine detention deserves appreciation, although the public had already been annoyed and angered by the secret transfer of detention without any announcement. In fact, Boyamin said, the KPK did not need to carry out that detention transfer. Besides discriminating against other detainees, it also discriminated against Gus Alex, who was also a suspect alongside Gus Yaqut. “Gus Alex was also detained and not given the freedom to celebrate Eid at his home,” he stated. The KPK’s action, he continued, was unfair to Gus Alex and to all Indonesian people. Therefore, MAKI urges the KPK to protect the feelings of the Indonesian people by not engaging in strange actions and giving strange responses. The responses in question relate to the KPK spokesperson’s statement answering questions from the public and journalists that the detention transfer was for investigation strategy. Boyamin questioned the basis of that strategic intent from the KPK. It was proven that after the news of the detention transfer became widely known, the KPK then returned Gus Yaqut to routine detention. “So that statement was utterly nonsensical and hurt the people’s feelings; please stop it and then achieve even greater success,” he said. It is hoped that this incident will make the KPK more successful and able to match the impressive achievements of the Attorney General’s Office (Kejagung) in its ongoing corruption eradication efforts. “In the past, Kejagung lagged behind KPK. But now, KPK has not only become a spectator to Kejagung’s achievements but has also committed blunders that hurt the people’s hearts,” he explained. MAKI, Boyamin said, will still report this incident to the KPK Supervisory Board, even though Gus Yaqut has been returned to detention. “And MAKI will still report to the KPK Supervisory Board and will continue to monitor if there are any more strange occurrences that we challenge through pre-trial,” said Boyamin.
